Alsberghe & Van Oost, Gent

Name: Alsberghe & Van Oost Gent (AVO)
Builded in 1879
Abandoned in 1998
Demolition started in 2004

The AVO-buildings located at the Drongensesteenweg were the last scrap of one of the oldest industries in Belgium. In 1879 the first fate of the building was a bleach-field.

In 1987 the firm went bankrupt but the building was protected cause there was a old steam-engine in one of the buildings. Also between the buildings there were some ponds and vegetation that the city would like to keep.

In 2004 the city of Gent decided to demolish the buildings to make place for 320 residential units, 3000mē for offices, 2500mē for shops, underground parking lot and lots of green.

The demolition had a lot of delay this was mainly caused due problems with environmental condition (polluted ground). They started only in 2006 instead of 2004. At this moment some of the protected buildings are still there and they will be reconverted.
